Grants Awarded in 2003

Below is a list of the 2003 recipients, which include schools, community gardens, public gardens, and a miscellany of non-profit groups doing community work, which fulfills HPSO's mission.

Project Name: OSU Extension Consumer Horticulture Website
Develop and maintain an educational website to serve the general gardening public and consumer horticultural community. This site also serves the OSU Master Gardener volunteers, and unlike other websites this one functions as a clearinghouse for gardening information, gardening activities, applied research and volunteer information.

Project Name: OSU Extension, Polk and Marion Counties: Evaluation of Hebe Species
Funding for an on-going project to identify and advance the cultivation of Hebe species in the Pacific Northwest though evaluation trials.

Project Name: Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon's Patton Home Gardening and Therapeutic Horticulture Program
Support the creation of a raised bed herb and flower garden, and an area of native plant habitat. This program provides drug and alcohol-free affordable single-room occupancy housing for people with low incomes.

Project Name: Portland Classical Chinese Garden Bilingual Plant Signs
Matching grant for creating and installing Chinese & English plant identification signs within the garden.

Project Name: Glencoe High School's Crimson Florist Program
Support their on-going greenhouse program for developmentally and mentally disabled students to gain vocational training in the horticultural industry. Vegetables and herbs grown by students were used in the Growing Gardens program, which supports low-income families in growing healthy food.

Project Name: The Hardy Plant Society of Bend Oregon: Libby's Garden
Funding for an irrigation system for a new "pocket" garden in downtown Bend garden that showcases hardy perennials suitable for the high desert environment.

Project Name: Friends of Portland Community Gardens: Children's Gardening Program
Funding for tools and curriculum materials needed for comprehensive children's gardening program at three community garden sites.

Project Name: Lone Fir Cemetery: Historical Plant Identification and Restoration Project
Support the identification of naturally occurring and historically significant planted specimens within this 30 acre historic cemetery and to install appropriate new plants. The project seeks to increase awareness of native and historic plants, and increase wildlife habitat value.

Project Name: Trillium Charter School Gardens
This project funding created an organic garden used as an outdoor classroom involving kindergarten through 12th grade students. Activities include tending raised bed garden beds, maintaining compost and worm bins, and organizing food donations.
