Garden School Workshop:
Botany for Gardeners 101
Join instructor and avid gardener Bob Nelson for three sessions focusing on plant anatomy and function, plant growth. and plants as chemical factories. Together these will make you a better gardener as you begin to understand what plants need for optimal growth. Each session will feature hands-on activities to enhance learning and subject matter tailored to what gardeners need to know. Don't be daunted by the idea of a 'science' class. This will be non-threatening, interactive and fun. Bob Nelson is a long-time member of the horticulture program faculty at Clackamas Community College.

Winter Lecture Program:
The Simplified Garden
Val Easton, Seattle plant doyenne and author of the
weekly "Plant Life" column for the Pacific Northwest
Magazine of the Seattle Times, proposes a transition to the
thoughtfully planned and selective garden, comfortable in
size and scale. She will share her insights about creating a
simplified but multi-layered and functional garden which is
easy to live with and live in, where "decisive editing" has
culled elements which require too much time, work, energy
or water. Val's talk coincides with the publication of
her latest book, The New Low-Maintenance Garden: How
to Have a Beautiful, Productive Garden and the Time to Enjoy
It (Timber Press). It's a theme that should resonate
with practiced and novice gardeners alike, as we search for
ways to cultivate a private green oasis without the chores
of a maintenance slave. Val's new book is filled with beautiful
visuals and this presentation promises the same.
Kaul Auditorium, Reed College 3203 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland 97202 Campus Map Program begins at 10:00 a.m. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. for plant, book and seed sales $15 for HPSO members, $20 nonmembers.
