The HPSO Horticultural Library
The Hardy Plant Society maintains a library of horticulture-related materials at its office, 828 NW 19th Avenue, Portland, Oregon.
Members may check items out, and may use reference books for research purposes at the office. The library’s hours coincide with those of the office, Tues-Fri, noon to 5pm, closed Sat-Mon.
Several hundred newly published books, and a number of donated volumes have been acquired in recent years to address current interests in horticulture. We maintain a number of subscriptions to horticultural periodicals as well, including The Garden, Gardens Illustrated, Fine Gardening, Pacific Horticulture, Garden Design, Hortus, Horticulture, The American Gardener and The Plantsman.
We regularly review new publications for inclusion in our library, and also replace older editions and monographs on many horticulture related subjects. We also receive donated books from members and their families to include in our collection. Periodically, we release a New Acquisitions announcement with titles and brief descriptions of new items available.
Our library has excellent sections on garden history, botany, edibles, trees, shrubs, more than sixty popular genera, garden design, and international gardens. We include publications by many contemporary notable plantsmen and women, designers, historians and collectors as well as garden artists, writers and experts in specific genera. We also have a number of older volumes of classic materials for research and reference.
If your interest is in literary writing, we have acquired many wonderful volumes by inspired gardeners who have written across hundreds of years, and also include some of our best contemporary writers.
Requests and suggestions from the membership is encouraged. If you would like to be on the Library Committee, or would like to participate in the HPSO Book Group, contact the office, 503-224-5718 or send us an email.
