Gen(i)us Program:
Lilies for the Garden - Judith Freeman, The Lily Garden

Judith Freeman, our genus genius for March, has been hybridizing lilies for over 30 years, beginning in 1971 as a geneticist at Oregon Bulb Farms. Do you wonder why so many of the 'garden-center' lilies peter out in our gardens? Most were bred for the cut-flower market and were never intended or tested for garden performance. There is a world of wonderful lilies bred in the Pacific Northwest specifically for the garden by this award-winning breeder. She especially loves the delicate grace of the dainty pendant-flowered (and often temperamental) species with their long inflorescences. By embryo-culturing, which she pioneered, she has achieved very difficult crosses, linking these species with the toughest modern hybrids. She also pioneered in crosses linking the glorious but virus-prone Oriental lilies with the tougher, heat tolerant trumpets, and her Scheherazade and Silk Road are the most popular garden lilies of the last decade. Judith presents the whole range of lilies, emphasizing those best suited to our gardens. Learn how she develops, grows, propagates, tests and harvests these lilies.
Judith is generously donating lilies for door prizes! And she will bring bulbs for sale, ready to plant for flowering this summer, and for many summers to come
