Members' Reading Room at Elk Rock Garden

Another great member-exclusive benefit at HPSO is use of our Reading Room inside the Manor House at Elk Rock Garden, where the HPSO offices are located in Portland, OR. This inviting, historical space from 1916 includes two high-ceilinged rooms, each half-paneled with quarter-sawn oak and featuring a fireplace. Natural light fills the rooms from two sides, with the south side overlooking the garden.

Come explore the collection of about a thousand volumes spanning genus-specific topics, historical gardens, landscape design, and more. This is not a lending library but instead a place where you can look up information, take some notes, interact with other members, or buy a gift membership for a friend. It is the perfect stop to combine with a tour of Elk Rock Garden, one of the oldest and largest intact private gardens in Oregon.

Fully staffed by volunteers, the Reading Room is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (excluding federal holidays). Free wifi is available, as is a bathroom. To enter the space, walk from the Elk Rock parking lot along the right side of the manor around to the back where you will see the entrance to the garden and, on the left, the Reading Room’s entrance door.

Would you like to be an HPSO Reading Room volunteer? Sign up is simple, please follow this link at Signup Genius. Shifts are available for signup 30 days in advance. Work includes some light organizing (the heavy lifting has already been done), some inventorying, accepting donated books, perusing books if you like, meeting new friends, and greeting folks. Each shift requires two people, so you'll always have company.
